Exercise is Medicine

What if there was one prescription that could prevent and treat dozens of diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity?

Some call it a no brainer. Others, a magic bullet.

The fact is, groundbreaking research has proved that exercise, at the correct intensity and duration, not only improves the quality of life – it decreases the incidence of disease, chronic health conditions and obesity. At a time when our nation faces an alarming health crisis, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Association launched the Exercise is Medicine™ program and, with the support of many other prestigious organizations, invite you to be a part of history.

Exercise is Medicine™ is an initiative launched by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Medical Association (AMA) focused on encouraging health care providers to include exercise when designing treatment plans for patients.

The guiding principles of Exercise is Medicine™ are designed to improve the health and well-being of our nation through a regular physical activity prescription from doctors and other health care providers, or from a health and fitness professional working with the health care provider.

A Health Care Call to Action

Join us as we embark on a nationwide campaign to initiate a dialogue between physicians and every American. Our mission is to make sure that exercise is front and center in every discussion on disease prevention, health and wellness.

 1.  The EIM Web site—www.exerciseismedicine.org—supports this initiative, with information and resources for physicians, health and fitness professionals, the public, and policy makers.  Click on “Join Us” at the top to receive updates.

 2.  Encourage your doctor to learn more about the initiative and use the easy to access resources through EIM.  Do you have a primary physician, specialist, or chiropractor that believes in the benefits of physical activity or provides you with exceptional services?   As an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer,  I would like to forward the EIM initiative information and ways to access easy materials such as a prescription book.  Please share or send me the name, and address, or  phone number for a brief introduction to the initiative.

 3.  Spread the word and share the resources with those around you at work, school, and in your community.  Look for more information regarding Exercise is Medicine Month coming in May to get involved in community initiatives.

FYI, a global conference is expected for this summer as health and fitness professional meet with community leaders all around the world to adopt the guiding principles of Exercise is Medicine!
